(1) BIO SCIENCES COUNSELORS AVAILABLE ON WALK IN WEEKS  8 ­ 10. All of the Bio. counselors are available to assist students with winter quarter scheduling of classes & academic advisement. 15 minute walk in sessions. Monday 10am ­ 12 noon and 1-4pm;Tuesday ­ Friday, 9am ­ 12 noon & 1-4pm. Location, Bio. Sciences 3 building, first floor. Check in at the reception area. Appointments will be available again on Monday, December 7th.

(2) PRE MED ADVISEMENT WORKSHOP, WED., NOV. 18TH.  Are  you premed? Want a medical career but not sure what you need to do now. Get the facts now!  If you are goals are to apply to medical school you need to start planning now! Get equipped early with the facts. Let the counselors from Bio Sci student Affairs provide you with the resources for a successful candidacy. It is not too early to start planning for your future.Our  power point presentation will cover medical schools pre-requirements, how to prepare for a successful candidacy, address facts and myths , and answer any questions you may have.  Don't wait until your junior or senior year to start looking for resources. A successful applicant plans ahead.  Join us on Wednesday, November 18,  2009 at  5PM-6:30PM in HSLH 200 (Howard Schneiderman Lecture Hall).

(3) BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH PROGRAM.
School of Biological Sciences“Excellence in Research”2009-2010.

(5) Careers in Teaching Workshop on Thursday, Nov. 19th. Specifically for Bio., Math, other Science & Engineering majors. Information session for teacher preparation programs in the UCI Dept. of Education. Learn about the great opportunities and application process. Time: 12pm ­ 1:30pm in HSLH, room 200. (6)  CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL & PREVENTION (CDC) FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY. The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Laboratory Fellowship Program prepares laboratory scientists for careers in public health. The two-track program trains qualified candidates (bachelor’s and master’s levels) to support public health initiatives. Great opportunity for graduating seniors. Application deadline is February 12, 2010. The new class of approximately 40 fellows will begin their assignments in September, 2010. (7) Volunteers needed for study on MCAT, DAT OR PCAT.  Dr. Joanne Frattaroli, of the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior is conducting a study in which she is looking for students who are planning to take the MCAT, DAT or PCAT in the next year or so to find out about the lives of students who are preparing to take one of these exams.  She would like to talk to you on the phone a few times to ask you questions about your mood, personality, health, and studying habits, she will have you come to her office for one visit, and she ask you to fill out a very short survey before and after your exam that asks you how you are feeling at that moment.  The phone interviews and the office visit would be arranged around your schedule and you would be paid $25 to thank you for your help.  If you would like to participate, please contact her at (951) 662-3735 or <mailto:jfrattar@uci.edu>jfrattar@uci.edu .

(8) Stanford University School of Medicine S.U.M.M.A. Conference, Feb. 13, 2010. Please join us on Saturday, February 13, 2010 for the 19th annual Stanford University Minority Medical Alliance (SUMMA) Conference as students from all over the state of California and beyond come to the Stanford School of Medicine to learn about careers in medicine and the pathways to get there. Various workshops will be offered that discuss a variety of topics including the admissions process, the challenges of medical school and affording medical school. In addition, the conference will have several keynote presentations from outstanding faculty. (9) Weil Cornell Medical College, Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program for PreMedical Students, deadline is Feb. 1, 2010. Identifying potential medical students who have a major interest in the medical problems of the underserved is critical. The Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program is designed to give 25 premedical students deeper insights into the field of medicine, including issues that greatly affect the health of traditionally undeserved groups. (10) Thanksgiving Week, Monday -Nov. 23rd ­  Friday - Nov. 27th, Bio. Sciences Student Affairs Office hours of operation.  During Thanksgiving week (9th week of the quarter), the Biological Sciences Student Affairs Counseling Office will be open on Monday 10am ­ 12 noon and 1-4pm, and Tuesday from 9am ­ 12 noon and 1-4pm. The Biological Sciences Student Affairs Office will be closed Wednesday, November 25th, through Friday, November 27th. Regular hours as of Monday, Nov. 30th.

(11) THE NEXT LOR WORKSHOP IS NOVEMBER 24th 2-3:30 in Humanities Gateway 1800 (if you plan on using the service for the upcoming cycle (for admissions Fall 2010 or 2011) you must attend and pay by December 1st! )
